From Books to Blueprints: A $60,000 Investment in MERS Students

A $60,000 grant is opening new doors for students across the MERS district — fueling a powerful expansion of both literacy and STEM learning. Through the Literacy and STEM Expansion Grant submitted by Jodi Pepchinski, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Human Resources, the district is strengthening the Units of Study Literacy Program and growing Project Lead the Way, creating richer, more dynamic learning experiences from the classroom library to the engineering table.

The Foundation’s Literacy and STEM Expansion Grant is a strong investment in both basic reading skills and future-ready learning. With this funding, classroom libraries across the district are being carefully expanded to better match the Units of Study and support specific genres and literacy standards. Teachers and literacy coaches are pinpointing targeted gaps — such as more titles in fables, myths, and legends — to ensure students have direct access to quality texts that improve comprehension, engagement, and independent reading growth throughout the school year.

Along with improving literacy resources, the grant supports the expansion of “Project Lead The Way” (PLTW), a nationally recognized STEM program that fosters problem-solving, teamwork, and innovation. The district is extending PLTW into 5th and 6th grades while continuing to strengthen the 4th-grade program. Funding covers classroom equipment, instructional materials, and teacher training—making sure students gain hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences that develop real-world skills.

"We are sincerely grateful for The Foundation's continued support. This investment goes far beyond providing vital materials and equipment — it strengthens our teachers' professional growth and ensures the long-term sustainability of our programs. By promoting literacy instruction and expanding STEM opportunities, The Foundation is demonstrating a true commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and meaningful learning experiences for every student," stated Jodi Pepchinski.
